Matthew 5:21-22

Matthew 5:21-23

[21] “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ [22] But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.

Head: What does the passage show about how God views our harsh treatment of one another?

Heart: Do you take seriously how you treat someone through your words and actions?

Hands: In spite of Covid-19 limitations, how can you positively build someone up today?

We can choose to either mold our lives around the Word of God or to mold the Word to our lives, reshaping the Word to our convenience. Which will you choose?

During that time, it was common for the Israelites to think that they only had to obey the command: "You shall not murder." And as long as they obeyed that command, how they treated one another did not matter. Jesus gives the true interpretation of the command "You shall not murder," which meant that they were not to harm one another and that instead they were to treat each other kindly and build each other up in love.

Jesus told His disciples that He will send the Spirit and the Spirit will give them understanding of what He has said while He was with them. Let's ask and trust in the Holy Spirit also gives us understanding of the Bible. But don't only ask for understanding. Ask that the Spirit will help you to obey the desires of God as He has revealed in His Word.
