James 1:26-27

James 1:26–27
[26] If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. [27] Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

Reflection Questions

Head: Do you think you can sometimes say careless or hurtful things, if you’re not careful?

Heart: Our words come from our hearts. What are some issues in your heart that you want God to deal with?

Hands: How can you help someone in need?

Being religious and bridling your tongue go hand in hand. The Bible says that if we think you are religious but disregard watching your words, then (1) we are lying to yourself, and (2) our religion is not really even a thing.

So if you're serious about being faithful before God, today’s passage encourages us to:
(1) Have a compassionate heart for the needy and go put that into action.
(2) Focus on protecting your heart from the sinful influences that come from around you.

Jesus showed what true religion is.  With a compassionate He lived to His final breath to minister to those in need, even though we didn't deserve it!  He wants to help us to live like Him and He wants to protect our hearts as we do.
